About this deal

But as far as I am concerned, the scenes now play out much more evenly and believably and, in the case of the Harpies sequence, it is now clear, and more logical that we have passed from day to night for the Argonauts' victory over the creatures in the next encounter.

Like any film touched by Harryhausen, though, the real stars of the show are his magnificent creations. Occasionally, we get some mood-setting wind whistling around the back of the environment - when Jason meets old Argos and we first get to see the ship, the Argo, and, more acutely, when Hercules and Hylas stand in the eerie valley of the Titans - and the sound of a crowd can stretch around the back quite reasonably - the good-natured celebration of the earlier scene when Hylas outwits Hercules, say. We fully accepted the idea that a strong man shouldn't have to be so buff that he couldn't walk through a normal door.Loosely based on the epic poem The Argonautica by Apollonius Rhodius, the film recounts the tale of Jason and his infamous voyage to find the fabled Golden Fleece. On the DVD, you can see the deep blue sky above their heads in certain shots, and you can tell from the light on their faces that this is far sunnier occasion than the shade would suggest.

Considering what has been achieved with a limited source, and the fact that the same limited source is on here as well, Sony's BD of Jason And The Argonauts gets a strong 7 out of 10.There are a couple of scenes where it loses its clarity a little but overall this is a great blu ray to add to the collection.

If it weren't for films like Argonauts, and artists like Ray Harryhausen, we wouldn't have films like Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings or Avatar. They keep tabs on Jason's adventures by consulting a celestial TV perhaps inherited from our old Egyptian friend Im-Ho-Tep. Ray Harryhausen interviewed by director John Landis (SD, 11:53) – The only real recycled supplement is a featurette in which director John Landis (' An American Werewolf in London') joins Harryhausen to talk about the film's monsters and explain the stop-motion process with a peek at one of the actual skeleton models used in the movie. Jason and his crew must overcome incredible obstacles including a 100-foot bronze giant, the venomous Hydraa huge creature with the heads of seven snakes, and a spectacular battle with an army of skeletons.Sony did such a superb job with JASON that I am sending them a snail mail letter commending the effort. Jason and the Argonauts' shines even more in the audio department--as this Blu-ray not only includes the original mono soundtrack from past releases, but Sony's engineers have also remastered the track to provide an all-new DTS-HD Master Audio 5. Utterly cringe-worthy with Landis' woefully unprofessional style totally overbearing and patronising, this is possibly classic parody material.

But, one of the coolest treats is seeing the concept art and test footage Harryhausen made for his interpretation of H.But the best part is the energetic score composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann ('Citizen Kane' and ' Psycho') and performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. But far from making me biased towards this new edition and, especially, its hi-def transfer, this probably made me less forgiving and more critical.
