Don’t forget to check out our latest Book Club snack – this month we’re going back in time and making a Wartime Carrot Cake. None the less I found myself drawn into their simple story and cared for all characters and their pets and enjoyed the experience of the audio book, read by the author. Find out about the latest book in the 'Girl, Missing' series, Secret Sister, in this short video by author Sophie McKenzie. When the waves rage—whether from outside or from within your own heart—direct their power into those harmonious words.

How are three kids and a their pets going to get there, and undetected too, seeing as they're on the run!

I loved Noah's determination to save his beloved pet dog and a host of friends pets from the government recommend euthanasia of pets at the start of WW2.

With the help of his best friend Clem, her elderly dachshund Frank, the local bully Big Col and his pet python Delilah, Noah embarks on a runaway rescue mission. The daring and heroism of the three children is felt by the reader even if they don’t feel that way about themselves. The same Phil Earle, who last month walked the red carpet at The British Book Awards to win the Children’s Fiction Book of the Year Award 2022 for his first children’s middle grade novel published by Andersen Press last year, ‘ When the Sky Falls ’.When the government advises people to have their pets put down in readiness for the chaos of war, hundreds of thousands of people do as they are told. Adults need to be aware that the book includes sensitively described animal death and parts of the adventure are quite tense. We totally understand why the children rebel; we make the journey along the Thames with Noah, Clem and Big Col, we know that, in their eyes, they are doing the right thing. This book seemed like the kind of book that I would absolutely love, and it has received so much praise.

I’d never heard animals had to be destroyed by govt decree, and can instantly sympathise with the main character, let alone factoring in a deal that in Noah’s mind will keep his soldier father safe. Noah takes the responsibility to heart, believing that keeping the dog safe will keep his father safe, too. This event at the start of the war saw approximately 750,000 pets in the UK culled and is now referred to as the ' British pet massacre' or the 'pet holocaust'.His last promise to his dad was that if he keeps Winn and mum safe, then he'll be keeping his dad safe and then they can be reunited at the end of the war! If you have ever owned and loved a pet you will understand the plight that all domestic animal owners faced during World War II.
