I watched my 'The Shining' 4K Blu Ray for the first time last night, and came to the realisation that in previous years I'd only been watching the European Cut that was shortened down from just under 2 and a half hours. The commentary is also sensitively done in the sense that it understands when to just shut up from time to time so that you can appreciate some of the filming, acting, location and directing points in a particular scene that the commentators have just discussed. He’ll see to it that the hotel suffers no damage while it’s closed for the off-season from October to May.

Although Warners hasn’t come up with anything new on the extras or soundtrack front, The Shining’s 4K Blu-ray’s new 4K HDR picture quality is so damn good that the disc is an essential purchase for anyone who loves either the film or the 4K Blu-ray format. It’s also visually remarkable, one of the first productions to use the Steadicam camera mount (which was new at the time) and certainly the first to really take advantage of what it could do (Garrett Brown, who invented the mount, was personally involved in this production—his commentary is included on the 4K).Now widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films ever made, The Shining was directed and produced by Kubrick, who wrote the screenplay with Diane Johnson. Perhaps because the data rate is so consistently high, the grain in The Shining 4K feels perfectly judged and immaculately natural, never overwhelming a shot or part of a shot, and never pushing out any of the picture’s incredible detail. That’s Danny’s escape, pedaling from bloody visions and premonitions based on the only life he knows. But if you haven’t watched the extras before on any previous disc edition of the film, there’s plenty to get your teeth into. While the film uses a lot of muted colors that may not jump off the screen, it is the little details of the set design that will make a lasting impression on the viewers.
