About this deal

In his book The Mystery of Jack of Kent and the Fate of Owain Glyndŵr, Alex Gibbon argues that the folk hero Jack of Kent, also known as Siôn Cent – the family chaplain of the Scudamore family – was, in fact, Owain Glyndŵr himself. His position in history is significant, not only in Welsh memories but as a historical figure in general. What is Owain Glyndwr Day? Why Do We Celebrate it?

In February 1405, Glyndŵr negotiated the " Tripartite Indenture" with Edmund Mortimer and Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland. During the reign of Dafydd V, the Royal Arms were altered by Dafydd to fit his claim to the British throne. In 1401 and 1402, the English Parliament enacted penal laws against the Welsh, designed to coerce submission in Wales, but the result was to create resentment that pushed many Welshmen into the rebellion.

In 1999, Wales Heritage started a campaign for the day to be designated a national and public holiday. Insurrection in Wales: the rebellion of the Welsh led by Owen Glyn Dwr (Glendower) against the English Crown in 1400. Using the castles that remained in English control, he gradually began to retake Wales while cutting off trade and the supply of weapons. In March 1387, Owain fought as a squire to Richard FitzAlan, 4th Earl of Arundel, [6] in the English Channel at the defeat of a Franco-Spanish-Flemish fleet off the coast of Kent. Following the precedent set by Dafydd, Arthur retained the use of the uncrowned Arms of Morgannwg as the arms of the Principality of Morgannwg and the position of Prince, whilst using a Crowned Royal Shield defacing the Arms of Glyndwr as the Royal Standard of Wales.

Townspeople annually gather at the equestrian statue of Glyndŵr in Corwen town square on the date of his proclamation in 1400. This was the last time that Owain was seen alive by his enemies, although it was claimed he took refuge with the Scudamore family.The other arms are the "Union" arms of 1720-1796 whereby Wales was represented in the British Royal Arms.
