Her nonsense serves to stall his business (his cheque is not delivered), and is her means of escape from the oppressive situation. There are various historical and racial implications here and the year is important to all of them, as indicated by the question which suggests that humanity is coming to the endpoint of inquiry – the ‘final answer, to everything? After a five-year stay in London, during which she begins drinking to excess, passing her days in bars, and spending her nights in hotel rooms, Sasha hits rock bottom. As a result, it’s a big deal whenever she’s able to track down some money to borrow, since doing so allows her to stop constantly worrying about how she’ll get by.These allusions to literary origins, to ‘my beautiful, my darling' Paris and to death in the novel’s opening pages suggest that the novel’s title has a personal resonance.
