There was a bit of involvement of other side characters here and there, which added to the tension of the world. The focus of the plotline heavily falls on romance; there was little exploration and explanation of the world which I am curious about and hope we get to see more of that in the second book. Then there’s Toni, he’s a dream of a best friend!! I want him as mine. There’s vulnerable Xander (Nicci Harris please tell me we get a Xander book!!) Then you’ve got smooth and charming Clay, and then there’s Bronson. An absolute beast with a heart that’s probably going to break mine. Even Butch made me a gooey mess with his roundabout way of protecting his boys. Oh Max, (in a Cassidy voice), the tough mafia heir, who was born into a life he didn’t choose, growing up in the face of brutality, learning and experiencing first hand, from a very young age the darkness and evil that lurks in humanity. i normally love a dark romance novel containing taboo subjects (really, it’s often what i look for often in a book) but i don’t know exactly yet what it is about this one that made me feel super uneasy (well actually i do know, but it seems that i’m so frustrated with this book that i can’t properly articulate it) First off this is two books in one- which is fabulous. I love that the author made my life easier for me.

Max is notorious for just having lots of causal sex with women, he isn’t one to commit. Cassidy is aware of this and she seems more like the relationship type. She hasn’t yet lost her virginity. He has a dark intimidating presence, hinting at a life lived hard and fierce. He is a man of few words, but his actions cut straight to the point.While in real life I appreciate Cassidy’s family’s concerns about how controlling Max came off, but when I’m reading these types of books I leave my feminism at the door and choose to see his “overbearingness” as “protective” 😌 He probably didn’t help his case by snapping at anyone who tried to come between them, including her siblings… Their dynamic may not have seemed balanced but they were each other’s anchors and it was actually so beautiful to see. The events that take place at the end were so bittersweet which was only driven home but Nicci’s letter afterwards! Max’s letter made me cry and Nicci’s kept those tears flowing 😭 I miss this couple so much already and I hope we still get to see a lot of them throughout the rest of the series 🥺 Only Nicci Harris could have me rolling in tears from laughter one minute and then pulling my hair out the next. ""Our Thing"" went from zero to call the fire brigade hot, insanely fast and I loved all the twists and turns and surprises. The premise of one simple act causing a chain reaction of chaos was sheer brilliance."" Jessica from Jessica Reads It. But she gives me a break from this nightmare." This is the first book of Nicci Harris’ that I have read. What have I been missing! This book was absolutely phenomenal, I could not put it down. stars. I read this a while ago, so this review won't be very detailed, but this is a good read if you like the tropes of mafia, virgin girl / experienced guy, jealous /possessive hero, classy girl/ rough guy, and surprise pregnancy towards the end.
