About this deal

The Insta360 ONE RS (so many caps!) is a multi-camera with impressive stabilisation in all modes, its Twin Edition coming with both a 5.7k 360 double-sided lens and a 4k ‘boost’ lens. You can swap one module on the fly depending on what you’re trying to capture, the style you want and how much you want to tinker with footage after the fact. The core which handles the processing, transfer and touch screen interface feels more responsive across the board. Faster startup time, new shortcut tap for favourite modes and a zoom interface. Of course, the resolution boost won't mean much unless you have the hardware to actually view 8K media. But as always, the option to future-proof your footage is always appreciated, and the extra pixels open up more options for editing without noticeably compromising image clarity. The ONE RS battery capacity is 21% bigger than the ONE R battery. The batteries can work with temperatures from -20º to 40°C (-4º to 104°F).

The cover for the USB-C port and microSD card slot is awkward to open and unwieldy to properly close for a water-tight seal. I found it impossible to properly latch this little door when the camera is in the mounting enclosure, so you must take the camera out of the enclosure to install the little SD card cover door. Fortunately, the Insta360 One RS camera is waterproof to 16 feet with the door installed, so torrential thunderstorms won’t hurt it. It is an outdoor action camera with a high fun factor.

A combo of 4K and 360º, the vlogger-friendly Insta360 ONE R action camera is impressively small and impressively made

The Insta360 ONE RS's compact, portable size and modular versatility provide a lot of freedom to experiment and determine how you most like to shoot. It's a great, low-risk option if you're new to 360 video and want to try it out, but aren't quite ready to buy a camera strictly dedicated to it.

The two lens modules impress on specs. The 4K Wide Angle Mod is a f/2.0, 16.4mm focal length (35mm equivalent) lens that can snap photos in 12 MP (4:3) and 8MP (16:9) and shoot video in 4K 60fps. It also manages 200fps in full HD, allowing 8x slow-mo footage. Meanwhile, the Dual-Lens 360º Mod is standard Insta360 fare, with its two f/2.8, 7.2mm (35mm equivalent) lenses that together capture everything in 5.7K 30fps. Support for the 4K Boost Lens with the ONE R Core will come in a post-launch firmware update. Insta360 ONE RS vs. ONE R: The bottom lineAndroid devices with Snapdragon 845 and above chips, including Samsung Galaxy S9, Xiaomi Mi 8 or newer models. A yay if you need a little AI in your editing process. And a yay if your camera goes through a lot of bumps and scrapes and you need to replace one element of it not the entire unit - the joy of modular.

Judging from this showing, Insta360 is providing some more than decent competition for GoPro. The Resolution This one needs little explanation. ONE RS is now powered by a 1445mAh Battery Base, compared to the 1190mAh ONE R Battery Base. The Common Ground The Insta 360 ONE RS comes with multiple settings you can change to get your desired looks, you can change between the different resolution and FPS options, we also have shutter speed control, ISO, sharpness, exposure compensation, color profile, and other adjustments that affect the sound and stabilization. Is the Insta 360 ONE R really a pro-grade device? Most pro-videographers will want separate devices for shooting the same scenes in both formats. Besides, the 5.7K capture by the Insta 360 ONE R isn’t really enough for hi-res re-framing; we’re going to have to wait for the arrival of consumer-grade 8K or even 16K 360º cameras for that.Top row: No filter, though enhanced by Insta360's PureShot AI which is designed to reduce noise. Both lenses can capture in raw – as DNG files – as well as JPG. New for this version is that its boosted processing power enables the handling of still images in various resolutions up to 48MP, stills and video in Active HDR, and a new 6K widescreen mode that uses an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and a frame rate of either 24p or 25p. More importantly, its flagship video mode – 4K 60fps – now comes with Insta360’s impressive gimbal-like FlowState Stabilization. The advantage of this design is that you can switch between different lenses which allows you to have different types of camera in one setup. The One RS is waterproof up to 5m without a case so it can handle some underwater shots but don’t take it too deep. The Core Mod features a small touchscreen for manual control but the small size makes it difficult to change settings. The last attempt had HDR, but the ONE RS adds Active HDR, which is uniquely designed for capturing sports and fast action outdoors (though not in low light conditions). This video mode retains details in highlights and shadows and boosts colour, but also adds some FlowState Stabilization.

Where to Buy

For my second test, I wanted to edit the video conventionally, so that I was choosing the angles. For this test, I took a high-speed RIB (rigid inflatable boat) ride down the Thames. Tough work, but if not me, who?
