In parties and get-togethers, it’s common to hear the phrase “I come bearing gifts” from the guests arriving. It’s a simple way to say they brought gifts to grace the occasion and celebrate the day’s theme. At a birthday party, they get gifts suited for a birthday party. A baby shower attracts gifts related to the baby. But, is there a meaning to “come bearing gifts” other than the presumed obvious meaning? Correct: “She decided against bearing children.” (morally neutral but less socially acceptable than not baring them). From Greek history and the Trojan horse mythology, we know that these were the Trojan priest’s words, Laocoὄn, when he warned the Trojans against trusting the Danaans and accepting their gift. His words have since been paraphrased and used in different instances to warn of impending betrayal from those presenting as good with friendly actions like bringing gifts. Since the early days of Christianity, Biblical scholars and theologians have offered varying interpretations of the meaning and significance of the gold, frankincense, and myrrh that the magi presented to Jesus. Did the magi know of frankincense’s healing properties when they presented it to young Jesus? It’s possible, according to researchers who have been studying frankincense. Discover the medical uses of frankincense in “The Magi’s Gifts—Tribute or Treatment?” Barring your soul doesn’t make sense, either. You’re not excepting it or preventing it from doing something. Frankincense is an aromatic gum resin that is still widely used in parts of the Middle East and Africa today. It is produced by scraping the bark of certain native species of trees and then harvesting the beads of resin after they have dried. When burned as incense, it creates a strong and beautiful aroma. In the ancient near east, the cost of frankincense precluded it from being used as a common household air freshener. Rather, the burning of frankincense was closely associated with ceremonial worship of a deity. In this way, the inclusion of frankincense as a gift for Jesus may have indicated that the wise men understood that the prophecy of the newborn king carried with it a claim of deity. Albania? The sort of countries that, indeed, as in the awful song, do not know it’s Christmastime at all.Isaiah 60:6 describes the wealth of the nations coming to God’s people through Christ. Mary and Joseph saw a glimpse of this when they received the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And in this case, that wealth was likely used to help the family escape to another nation. Matthew tells us that as soon as the wise men departed, an angel of the Lord came to warn Joseph of Herod’s rage ( Matthew 2:13). Joseph was instructed to take refuge in Egypt, a journey of over 100 miles. For a family of humble means, a trip of this magnitude would be difficult to pull off. Though we don’t have a record of such, it is reasonable to think that the valuable gifts Mary and Joseph received from the wise men may have financed the family’s flight to Egypt.
As we all know from our nativity sets, some very special guests attended the birth of the Jesus: wise men from the east, bearing gifts for the newborn king - gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:11 states: "On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. " The other word, “baring,” has fewer uses, both of which are very different from the possible meanings for “bearing.” Another use for “bearing down” relates to pursuit. If one horse is bearing down on another in a race, it’s catching up and about to overtake them. Now that you know the difference, it’s easier to see whether bearing gifts or baring gifts is the right expression to use. But if you’re baring your gifts (i.e., exposing them), the mental image is very different. Because depending on the gifts you have in mind, baring implies you’re revealing them, uncovering them, or exposing them to others. And that can have consequences.What does baring mean? Baring is a verb. Specifically, it is the present participle of the verb to bare, which means to uncover or expose.
