The village takes its name from Princess Osyth who was beheaded by invading Vikings after she refused to renounce her faith.

She was hung along with another woman who was suspected to be a witch and it is of popular belief that their Essex ghosts now haunt The Cage. Exasperated they lit a small fire in the grate, the smoke from which unfortunately suffocated old "Spider," whose well cured remains are supposedly still up there today! Visitors to the place have reported seeing a monk who floats around on the grounds, while other reported ghosts including a cavalier and two women, one of which is usually seen in the lounge while the other is by the fireplace. To make matters worse, many of them have spooky stories attached to them to make them even more terrifying.While Essex is full of beautiful countryside and fun attractions, there is a darker side to our wonderful county. This church is located in Church Street, Great Baddow, and has been known to play host to a group of phantom Civil War era soldiers.

However, when you delve into the past of some of the county’s buildings and other locations many of them have a haunting history. It is believed that Alice was actually murdered in the hotel in 1638 which is why her spirit is still tied to the property.
