About this deal

Older children could link this book to the science of cooling down - why do we cool down when we get into cooler water? These include picture books such as Hoot Owl, Master of Disguise, illustrated by Jean Jullien, Where the Bugaboo Lives, illustrated by Neal Layton and The World Champion of Staying Awake, illustrated by Jimmy Liao. Trading Address (Warehouse) Unit E, Vulcan Business Complex, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EB.

Taylor’s ( Hoot Owl, Master of Disguise) concise narration is resonant with developmental authenticity and psychological insight, with just enough repetition to lend a pleasing lilt; it’s the emotional heart of this story. The idea that the baby bear feels the need to impress dad and yet dad holds back, allows baby bear to make mistakes yet is always there to support him is a beautiful message and invitation for boys and their fathers to do the same. The two bears seem to glide through an enchanting landscape of dark greens and browns sprinkled with rocks and exotic flowers, as the bright orange sun makes its way to a gorgeous final sunset image of father and child looking lovingly at each other as they walk home. When I first received and read this book, for whatever reason I was not keen on it and gave it a poor review.

Brave Bear Trust works to educate and inform children (especially Key Stage 2) about the risks of exploitation and how to protect themselves and others. We work closely with publishers and authors to ensure that we offer the best books on the market for your child.

A book for families, for dads and for illustration fans, this is in the same territory as the phenomenally successful Guess How Much I Love You , but with a subtler sentimentality that might appeal to a new generation of parents. The story follows a father and son bear duo who are hot - everything is hot and the story simply follows their day together. The parent-child relation (attentive adult allowing the offspring to be a risk-taker) is beautifully portrayed both verbally and in Emily Hughes glowing, superbly textured scenes into which she places the shaggy-coated characters. The capes come in a range of colours and our Brave Bear teddies are either white (pictured) or a light brown. Another is through feeling, which is harder to set; she tries to do this by using expression, body language and colour.

A little bear doesn't listen to their dad and gets hurt (life lesson that your kids will probably ignore). They haven't reached for it too much themselves, but do enjoy it when we read it and like to point out the bears. Little Bear is determined to lead the way and show his dad just how brave and clever he is but, as all parents know, this kind of excitement leads to accidents. At first I had mixed feelings but after repeat readings, and seeing how intently he listens to it, I've kind of fallen in love with this book.Brave is very sensitively written thus making it an invaluable resource for children to explore this important issue alongside a trusted adult. It is only when baby bear trips and hurts himself that dad intervenes and yet, it is here that baby bear shows some independence and chooses to continue leading the way down to the river. Hoot Owl wears a selection of ingenious disguises when hunting for food, but his prey always manages to escape. Osos es un libro muy bonito, las ilustraciones son un espectáculo y el mensaje que deja es algo muy motivador, destacó los gestos del osos y el amor en la relación padre e hijo, una lectura que no debe faltar en la librería de los más pequeños!
